The iPad 2nd 3rd and 4th generation are comprised of two parts in regards to the screen. The first part is the top layer which is called the digitizer. This is the part that frequently breaks when you drop your tablet. The digitizer and the glass are fused together. The second layer of the iPad is the LCD display. This is what displays the picture on the screen and is not connected to the digitizer piece. Usually, the piece that breaks is the digitizer layer and your LCD remains intact. Typical repair times for iPad screens are around 1 to 2 hours. The repair involves removing broken glass shards from the iPad housing, cleaning the housing, applying new adhesive and installing the new glass piece.
